REFRACT Template Assist™ accelerates the creation of REFRACT document templates from existing document references, representative sample data, branding, and business requirements. It is designed to reduce the effort required to move from an existing document design to a production-ready REFRACT template, without requiring organizations to begin with dedicated REFRACT template expertise.
Template Assist operates during the template design process. AI assists with authoring and refinement; it does not generate production documents. Templates are rendered using the actual REFRACT PDF™ engine, validated against the resulting output, reviewed, and approved before they are packaged for deployment.
Once deployed, production document generation uses the approved template and REFRACT's deterministic rendering pipeline.

Reference
Start with the information already available to the organization. This may include an existing PDF, document screenshot or reference design, representative sample data, branding requirements, document-specific instructions, and expected business content.
The objective is not to redesign a document from scratch unless desired. Existing document designs can provide the starting point.
Generate
Template Assist uses the reference design, representative data, and REFRACT template design patterns to accelerate creation of the initial structured REFRACT template.
Because REFRACT templates use a structured, declarative model, the design can describe document intent - sections, fields, tables, cards, conditions, styles, headers, footers, and other document elements - without changing the underlying rendering engine.
The generated result is a draft, not automatically a production template.
Validate
The template definition is validated before it is considered ready for deployment.
Validation can identify issues such as invalid configuration, unsupported properties or combinations, incorrect data bindings, missing required values, and other structural problems.
Applicable accessibility validation can also be performed as part of the template-development process.
Render
A valid template is rendered with representative sample data using REFRACT PDF itself.
This is an important part of the process. Template development is not validated only by inspecting JSON or assuming how a layout should behave. The same rendering engine responsible for production document generation produces the actual PDF used during template validation.
Inspect
The rendered document becomes the reality check for the design.
Inspection can identify issues that structural validation alone may not reveal, including:
- Unexpected pagination or page count
- Missing or incorrectly bound values
- Excessive or insufficient spacing
- Content flowing onto an unintended page
- Table width and page-overflow issues
- Image, SVG, or asset clipping
- Header and footer behavior
- Visual alignment and hierarchy
- Expected text or content missing from the resulting PDF
- Applicable accessibility concerns
Visual inspection and, where appropriate, PDF text inspection can both be used to verify the generated output.
Template rules establish the structure. The rendered document provides the reality check.
Refine
The template is refined based on observations from the actual rendered output, rather than assumptions about how the configuration should render.
The updated template can then be validated and rendered again, creating an iterative development loop: Generate, Validate, Render, Inspect, Refine.
The loop can continue until the document satisfies the intended structural, visual, accessibility, and business requirements.
Approve
AI-assisted creation and technical validation do not replace business review.
Before deployment, a qualified reviewer should confirm that the resulting document meets the organization's requirements, including presentation, business content, data mappings, approved wording, legal or regulatory content where applicable, and other organization-specific requirements.
Human approval establishes the boundary between a design-time draft and an approved production template.
Package
Once validated and approved, the template and its associated resources can be packaged as a REFRACT Package (.rpkg) for deployment and lifecycle management.
The approved package, not the AI design process, is what production document generation uses.

No AI in the Production Path
AI is not required in the production rendering path. This separation allows organizations to benefit from AI-assisted design productivity while preserving predictable, governed document generation in production.
Who Can Build REFRACT Templates?
Organizations have multiple options.
- Refract Logic can provide assisted template creation and conversion services, including REFRACT Template Assist where appropriate.
- Implementation partners can develop and maintain templates using the documented REFRACT template model and available reference patterns.
- Customer development teams can also create and maintain their own REFRACT templates when they prefer to manage template development internally.
Template Assist provides an additional path. It does not make the documented template model proprietary or prevent partners and customers from developing templates directly.

Template Assist follows the same philosophy: an existing invoice, quote, order, statement, agreement, or other business document can become the reference for a REFRACT implementation, rather than requiring the organization to abandon its current document design.
The objective is to complement what already works and provide another document path where REFRACT's capabilities are required.
