General Questions

The REFRACT Platform is a tenant-sovereign document infrastructure platform that generates, governs, signs, delivers, and audits documents inside your Microsoft environment. Rendering, storage, and audit run inside your Azure subscription, enabling secure document lifecycle management for enterprise business applications such as Dynamics 365, Dataverse, SharePoint, and other internal systems.

Rendering, storage, and audit run inside your Azure subscription. REFRACT hosts the signer/recipient portal for eSign, Delivery, and Workflow, plus licensing and notifications - see Security & Verification for exactly what each product sends there. Every document download redirects the browser to your own Dispatcher or SharePoint site, which serves the bytes directly; the portal never receives them. The signature image and field values a signer submits, and REFRACT Workflow attachment uploads, are the two exceptions: they pass through the portal in memory and are never written to its storage.

REFRACT Platform runs in Azure Functions inside your tenant. It integrates with SharePoint document libraries for template management, document storage, and metadata tracking, and uses Azure Service Bus for high-throughput document job queuing.

Yes. REFRACT Platform supports both real-time rendering and asynchronous processing using Azure Service Bus queues, which are optional and configurable per tenant. See Pipeline for queue architecture details.

Security & Compliance

REFRACT Platform is not a hosted SaaS platform and Refract Logic does not hold independent SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certifications. Since rendering, storage, and audit run inside your Microsoft tenant, it runs on Microsoft services, including SharePoint Online permissions and Managed Identity access; your compliance outcomes depend on your tenant configuration.

Documents stored in SharePoint leverage tenant-level permissions. Optional PDF password protection is also supported for sensitive documents. Audit trails can be stored in SharePoint lists or document libraries if enabled.

Yes. REFRACT Platform supports deployment in Microsoft cloud environments that allow Azure Functions and SharePoint Online, including government and regulated cloud environments where these services are available.

Architecture & Technical

REFRACT Platform connects to structured JSON data from:

  • Dynamics 365 / Dataverse
  • SharePoint document libraries
  • SQL and internal systems

It interprets schemas for PDF rendering and maps fields, hierarchy, and layout constraints automatically.

Yes. Rendering jobs can be:

  • Direct / real-time: HTTP-triggered, immediate response
  • Queued: Service Bus triggered for asynchronous or high-volume batch workloads

Queueing is optional and configurable via tenant settings.

Templates are stored in SharePoint libraries, which provide built-in version history, audit trails, and permission management, giving visibility into changes over time.

REFRACT Platform provides a system status report PDF from GET /api/render - a plain request always returns 200 with the status PDF. For monitoring tools, append ?ping=true (or ?ping=status) to get the real health check: 200 when healthy, 503 when not.

Licensing & Usage

REFRACT Platform uses tenant-based licensing. Trial licenses are capped at 100 documents and a 25 MB per-file limit; paid plans set their own document limits. See Trial and Licensing for how trial expiry and plan upgrades work.

Licenses can be updated or replaced per tenant. Expired licenses are automatically disabled.

Yes. REFRACT Platform allows multiple license tiers to be assigned to a single tenant, such as a trial license alongside a paid plan.

Usage is metered for every plan, not just trial: the Dispatcher reports eSign and delivery counts to the Licensing API nightly, regardless of plan tier. Only aggregate counts are sent, never document content.

Customization & Templates

Templates are stored in SharePoint document libraries, benefiting from:

  • Version history
  • Permission control
  • Governance via Microsoft 365

REFRACT Platform supports schema-driven template rendering.

Yes. REFRACT Platform uses schema-aware rendering, which supports:

  • Nested tables
  • Overflow handling
  • Hierarchical or dynamic data
  • Schema-driven layout generation

Yes. Templates can include logos and branding. Optional watermarks can be applied for both browser-rendered and function-rendered PDFs, with configurable placement, opacity, and angle.

Why REFRACT Platform

Traditional PDF APIs focus on either static layouts or developer-intensive integrations. REFRACT Platform is designed as document infrastructure:

  • Rendering, storage, and audit run in your Azure subscription
  • Handles structured data with schema-driven rendering
  • Supports governance workflows, batch processing, and tenant-bound security

This makes REFRACT Platform ideal for enterprise applications where compliance, scale, and control are critical.

REFRACT Platform supports complex tables, adaptive overflow, schema-aware layouts, and integrated governance workflows, making it suitable for document operations beyond simple report generation. See Capabilities & Features for a full breakdown.
